Being Irish is something that I’m hugely thankful for. Not just for the basic stuff, like the country’s stability that’s such a contrast to the US and UK on either side of us, but Ireland’s literary history & strong writing tradition has definitely influenced & helped me get to where I am today.
And I’m not just talking about the big names, like James Joyce or Oscar Wilde or any other well-known (usually male, usually white, usually featured on our school’s curriculum) writer. I’m talking about the Irish grá for language, our strong culture of poetry and spoken word, heck even the generous writer tax breaks! 😂
As I continue indie publishing, forging my path, putting into the world the stories and characters that come into my little head… I’m so thankful that I’m Irish on top of all that ☘️ Studying Old Irish as part of my History degree really made me appreciate Hiberno English – the English that Irish people speak today, with all its quirks 👍
