Mary Renault is the author I most aspire to be like, to write like, and she’s also just my gosh darn favourite writer. Author of The Bull From the Sea, The King Must Die, and my ultimate favourite, The Persian Boy, Mary Renault wrote the most excellent alternate history of Hellenistic Greece and the times of Alexander the Great. And more gay-boy smut than what AO3 could handle!
During her nursing training she met Julie Mullard (1912 – 2006), a fellow nurse with whom she established a lifelong romantic relationship. In 1948, after her novel Return to Night won an MGM prize worth $150,000, Renault and Mullard emigrated to South Africa, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
(sigh) Fecking off into the wilderness with the love of your life to write most excellent gay smut? Yes, please!
