This is something I’m grappling with lately, as reviews for Rise of One come in. Some readers naturally expected a lot more horror elements to the story, more gore, more blood & guts & slaying zombies.
But then others have praise the story’s ‘quietness’, its ‘eeriness’ in light of what else is out there on the market in terms of #zombie / #vampire / #post-apocalyptic fiction. It’s a fine line to walk between the sort of stories I want to tell, and the impact this will in turn have on the audience. I’m not someone who revels in depicting blood, gore, & beheading zombies. But I’m not one to shy from violence when it erupts as part of a narrative, either.
As an indie author, the course to choose is mine alone. I like to listen to both sides of opinion, then set them aside. Then I write the tale of Rise and his coven my own way 👍
